“Originally all abstracting in Hubbard County was done by the Register of Deeds located in the County Courthouse in Park Rapids, Minnesota. In the 1960’s this service was separated out into a private company by a woman named Beatrice Olinger. In 1966, it was purchased by Ardis McClelland.
In 1969 at the age of 16, Marilyn Wolff started working for Ardis, and they worked together, with one other employee, Betty Henry, until 1975 when Marilyn purchased the business and incorporated it into Hubbard County Abstract Co., Inc. At that time, she rented space in the old courthouse (now a museum located adjacent to the new courthouse). When the new courthouse was completed in 1976, Marilyn rented office space there until an opportunity arose in 1981 and Marilyn purchased the little house across the street.
HCAC is still there, but it certainly doesn’t look the same. After purchasing two adjacent lots, and many renovations and additions, it is now able to house the many employees that are needed to run the growing business. HCAC is now a team of seven, including Leslie Pickett, whose been with the business since 1976. In April of 2021 Annie McCarthy and her husband RJ purchased the business and incorporated it as Hubbard County Abstract & Closing, Inc.”
